We just visited Philipsburg with a bus load of Foster Grandparents from Southeastern Idaho. We were delighted with it scenic beauty, as well as the good neighborliness of all the shops we visited. Came home, excited and interested in finding out more. We visited the candy factory, ate in a bar and cafe, and climbed the steep hills. The courthouse, jail, and church house on the hill were special.

Just saw a report on the TODAY show this morning about Philipsburg and was very impressed with the spirit of the people and their compassion for one of the residence that became ill. The report greatly impressed me that these are some people I would really enjoy meeting.

I had to look up the town on the Internet to find out more about it. (My wife and I used to live in Cortez, Colorado.) I will make sure it is destination that we visit on our next trip out West in the summer of '06.........and you never know this may be just the place I'm looking for to hang my hat!

Visiting Philipsburg

As a transplanted Englishman living in Denver, I visted the town following the 2008 July 4th celebrations. I enjoyed all the lovely old buildings, fell in love with the half torn apart (pipedream rehab) called the Stephens Hotel and talked to Linda, the lady owner of the next door property and mused how long I could take to rehab the property to its former glory.$$$$$

My kids couldn't get enough of the old fashioned candy store nor the adjacent gems store.Gotta come back and spend some more time on those side walk benches and have another talkfest with the locals....Philipsburg the highlight of my trip to see the "in laws" in distant Sandpoint, Idaho. I am coming back for another looksee. Keep up the nice resto work on the town. Simply amazing!

Hello from Langley, British Columbia !

My husband moved to Canada after graduating from P-burg high school in 1971 but his love for the town (and Montana) has never changed and he can't get back there often enough. A sister (Delavera) and a brother (Leo) still live there and we have visited P-burg a number of times over the years, the last time being in July 2007. I'm sure we've seen all the ghost towns and historic buildings around the area, and we've climbed the hills above town many times. I've mentioned P-burg enough times to my boss (formerly from Michigan) that he stopped there a couple of years ago with his family - couldn't get the grandkids out of THE candy store! Philipsburg - definitely a place to visit!

Thanks for thre book

We visited in August 2009 from Virginia. I was looking through a used book shop on the upper right side of town, and a gentleman selling refreshments out of a trailer out front gave me a Tony Hillerman book. He enthusiastically suggested it and insisted that I not pay. Hardly more than two months later I've read that Hillerman book and ten others. If you live in Phillipsburg and know the man of whom I speak, please pass on my thanks for hours of pleasure with Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee on the Big Rez.

An amazing town with amazing folks!

My wife and I pulled in to Philipsburg in July of 2008 to go sapphire "mining". Upon pulling in to town and within 20 feet from our car, we both felt like this was the place for us to live! We came back again in July of 2009 and KNEW then that this was our place to settle. In August of 2009, Janice was given the opportunity to be the physician at the Granite County Medical Center. We now live in Philipsburg! Never have we lived in such a magnetic place with such amazing folks. The shops and the many old, rejuvinated buildings makes you feel like not leaving! -- Ever!! C'mon in and see for yourselves!

A great place

I love Philipsburg, it's my favorite place in the whole world. I spent many summers there with my Aunt Mary and Uncle Bill and their kids. My Uncle Bill had a yearly "Fish Fry" that included people from all around. My Aunt Mary and my mom (Mary's sister) would make tubs full of macaroni and potatoe salad. We still go visit almost every summer. I love camping with Larry & Bev, Tony & Modilon. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Visit on 4/19/10

We came to take pictures and left with knowledge that there are still some great and caring people. Everyone there from one end to the other end of town, everyone was helpful and friendly. We were able to get some wonderful pictures with history thanks to the 'Philipsburg Territory' newspaper. We even learned how to go blind looking for sapphires at the Sapphire-Gallery. Came out with some success. Thanks to all of you and hope to come back soon.

Return of a Native

My dear friend Jack (John Dawson) Winninghoff has told me that to revisit the scenes of his childhood in Phillipsburg is high on his "bucket list." Both his father,(known as "Dutch" or "Bubu" Winninghoff) and his mother (Mary Dawson) were born there in 1887 & 1888 respectively). Jack's grandfather, Frank Winninghoff, was one of the blacksmiths (his shop evolved into Winninghoff Motors, the earliest Ford dealership in MT). His grandfather, John Dawson, was president of the local bank in town. Working one summer in 1941 on Alfred Johnson's ranch in Hall, Jack remembers the area with great fondness. He turns 86 this November. What a great birthday present to take Jack back to Phillipsburg!

DADS STOMPING GROUNDS

My dad often tells stories of Phillipsburg. He lived in Maxville and Grandma's house is still there. I have fond memories of camping all around the area, hiking Goats peak, digging sapphires on the mountain had to take our own gear(don't know if you can do that now), flyfishing with grasshoppers (the kids' secret bait)on Smart creek and stopping in Phillipsburg for some great burgers. We came several times every summer it was a ritual. Don't change a thing!

Community

Ken and I have had a home here since 1997. I had a restaurant here (The Rendezvous) for five years. I've been involved with the Chamber, the Arts Council, Granite County Med Ctr Board and a number of smaller community groups, events and projects -- all because I want to do what I can to help make Philipsburg a wonderful place to live and/or visit. I believe, as residents of a small community, we have the responsibility to give back, in a positive way, to ensure our town continues to be a viable, desirable, inviting and enticing place to live and visit. Taking pride in the place you live is a requirement, if you ask me. And I vow to continue to do my part.

PHILIPSBURG, MONTANA

I still remember the fun times I had living in Philipsburg,I think the year was 1980 or 1981. I was only there about nine months or so but its a time I will never forget. Going to school, working at Gem Mountain and hiking or riding my motorcycle up to the old ghost town of Granite. I also remember going to the movies at the theater,I hope its still there. And ofcourse the great friends I met there. I'm going to have to get back there soon for a vacation, I sure hope some of my old friends are still there!

Planning for another visit

My family visited Philipsburg last August (2010). My wife and I are starting to look for a place like this for possible retirement living.
Question: We live in Northern Michigan (read, limited sunlight, hard winters). What would retirement in an area like Philipsburg be like? Any other visitors there that made it home? We are small town people and are a few years away from retirement yet. Anyone willing to share their experience?

Born in Philipsburg

I was back to visit my hometown about 4 yrs ago, with my youngest daughter and her family. I had lived in what was called Parkerville. I had my picture taken in front of the grade school. We visited the sapphire mine. My parents had a gold mine above Butte so we went there and camped. I have been retired for 10 yrs. now, and wish I could go back to Philipsburg again. No place like it. I now live in Mohall, ND.

Exchange student in P-burg

I came to Philipsburg in August 1998 as an exchange student. I got the shock of my life. I came from a Denmark from a town with 250.000 people and got a culture shok. I lived in a trailer with Wynett and Richard Johnson and their 3 kids. I went to Granite High, got a lot of new friends and learned to appriciate the very beautiful landscape. I still have contact to qiute a few friends from back then on facebook.I now live in Germany and my biggest wish is to come back and show my 3 kids a very special place and hope that I´ll still be able to recall those lovely memories of my Philipsburg

1st Visit During Valley Days!

I had the BEST time in Philipsburg the weekend of FCVD! The parade was so much fun. The nightlife in the evening was very much alive !!! I even went to my 1st play at the Opera House and laughed hystericaly! We love it here so much, We decided to purchase property. My husband has in the past lived up by Maxville and Im excited about returning! I hope to come back in another 2 weeks and Im more excited than any vacation I have ever been on.. This town is absolutely fabulous and if you do your research, you will find there's a lot of activities and events to occupy your time during the summer..

P burg

I was born in Philipsburg in 1948. I moved to Spokane WA when I was 9 years old
My character was formed there and have several family members buried there
I love Montana, my Grandpa helped build the Going Over The Sun highway through Glacier Park. I have 4 generations of both sides of my family that were Montanans. I miss it terribly and will always love it there

Guess I'm homesick.
The photos of the Grade-school brought back such great memories
I'm so glad to have found your website. Thank you

The best of two worlds

I grew up in the burg...I remember Does Drug, Winninghoff Motors, the lawyers house on the hill, the hotel that is now a Museum, Mom was the bartender and maid for many years. Does anyone remember the dog who was a bartender? Old Collie or bigger? And O" many many dark wonderful star filled nights. Where else in the world does one go down into a mine with her father (Leo Graham) what a life long memory. Where else do children run in an open field and cook potatoes under ground. Philipsburg will always be my home... "but damn its cold"... 27 degrees this week I remember some very cold days but lovely days in my home town.. lucky I lived in the P-burg.

Phillipsburg has a place in my heart

My grandparents Art and Rose Flint lived there. They moved sometime in the early fifties. My mother Mary Cathern Flint went to school there as well. I was was very young but I still remember a lot. I found the house they lived in while I stopped there a few years ago, and remember the house next to it and the sidewalk we use to walk along with Gramps to down town. I loved the report on the today show.

Gunsmithing

I did some business with a place called Flint Creek Arms Company back on 1989 The restoration of my Perazzi Shotgun was done by a David Demasi who owned the shop The work was very high quality and was done with a high degree of craftsmanship. I picked up the gun after the restoration and stayed a few days at the motel in Philipsburg I found Mr Demasi and the town folks really nice and people that will go out of the way to help you Great place

Beauty

I love the look of the town and the spirit it seems to have. I found this town looking at a map of Montana online. My husband and I visited Bozeman on our honeymoon in '04 and I loved it. So I was searching for towns around that area for the setting in my story I am writing and hope to have published someday. I picked Philipsburg as one of the towns. When I started researching it more, the more I have loved it!! I am hoping to someday visit!!! Thanks for all the information! And being such a wonderful town.

a great place for artists!

as a 4th generation Montanan, it was a joy to return and have a studio in P-burg for 10 years. My aunt and uncle were George and Connie (Conwell) McKee, they ran the Silver Dollar Bar in the 50s. I was the last to be rescued from the popcorn machine fire at the then 'Granada' movie house in 1956. Lots of great memories then and now. I'm excited to bring back the 'P-burg Paint-out', a group of artist who will paint in wonderful Granite county in June 2012.
